Position Description

The Faculty of Arts, Department of Sociology invites applications for an Instructor (two-year, limited term) specializing in teaching Quantitative Sociology. Area of research specialization is open. The ability to teach undergraduate Sociological Statistics is required. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2021. The position requires a PhD in Sociology or a closely related field. All But Dissertation (ABD) applicants will be considered if the candidate is close to completion.

The Department of Sociology is a research-intensive department with high standards in teaching. We offer undergraduate, MA and PhD degrees in Sociology and an undergraduate degree in Law and Society. The successful applicant will be required to teach both of our mandatory undergraduate Social Statistics courses (Sociology 311 and 315). Other teaching interests should align with our current course offerings. This position carries a teaching load of six to seven courses per year. 

Applicants are expected to maintain excellence in undergraduate teaching; demonstrate and maintain expertise in pedagogical practice; mentor students (possibly including effectively supervising students in the undergraduate Honours program); and commit to departmental and university service. We are seeking a candidate with a demonstrated record of teaching effectiveness and engagement with students.

Applicants must have demonstrated expertise in teaching undergraduate courses within applicable areas, such as social statistics or quantitative methods. The candidate should have experience successfully managing courses with lab or tutorial components, including the supervision of graduate Teaching Assistants. Evidence of excellence in teaching should be demonstrated via a teaching dossier (see below). Applicants should also identify other Sociology courses they could potentially teach.

  • A teaching dossier including:
    • Your teaching philosophy
    • Evidence of excellence in teaching (for example, course evaluations, teaching awards, peer evaluations etc.) and any experience with remote delivery of teaching
    • Demonstration of expertise in pedagogical practice  (for example, course outlines, assessments, exercises, etc.) and documentation of pedagogical development (for example teaching and learning workshops)
    • A list of courses that you would be interested in teaching 
  • a separate one-page statement identifying your contributions, or potential contributions, to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) along with your ability to work with a culturally diverse and international student body
  • Names and contact information of three referees, along with your written permission for the Chair of the Selection Committee to contact the referees for letters of reference which will be shared with the members of the hiring committee.
