Position Overview

The Office of Sustainability is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Specialist, Sustainable Buildings.

The University of Calgary's Office of Sustainability seeks an experienced Specialist, Sustainable Buildings to support the continued development of green buildings and sustainable built environments (  This is an exciting opportunity for a green building  professional to contribute to furthering the success of an institution  recognized as one of Canada's leaders in campus sustainability.  This position will collaboratively develop green building programs and projects with on-campus partners to advance the Institutional Sustainability Strategy and Climate Action Plan. 

The ideal candidate will come from an engineering background with proven work experience that is directly relevant to sustainable  buildings design, construction, and operations.  They will also have a proven track record with building successful partnerships and facilitating change within large organizations.

The Office of Sustainability leads the integration of sustainability initiatives in all aspects of university operations, advances community engagement in sustainability, and collaborates with the academic community to advance sustainability in the context of learning and research.  The Office is the steward of the Institutional Sustainability Strategy (ISS) and supports the University of Calgary's commitment to excellence and leadership in the pursuit of sustainability.

Reporting to and working closely with the Director, Energy Planning & Innovation, the Specialist, Sustainable Buildings is expected to work independently with minimal direct supervision, utilizing strong analytical, problem solving, time and change management skills. The successful individual must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as the position requires liaison with various members of the University community and external agencies.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

The Specialist Sustainable Buildings is responsible for providing expert green building technical knowledge and consultation services to the University community.  Responsibilities include:

  • Provision of green building consulting services (focuses on advising, evaluating, designing and inspecting) for major capital projects including facilitation of sustainable design charettes for capital project teams; ensuring projects develop in alignment with established sustainability goals; managing LEED and Zero Carbon Building certification documentation, submittals and audits; and developing supporting project procedures and design standards.
  • Advising on existing building sustainability strategy and supporting practices and standards for energy and water demand reduction, greenhouse gas reduction, healthy indoor environmental quality, and construction and demolition waste reduction and diversion. May including existing buildings LEED certification (EBOM) or ARC data base management.
  • Coordination of educational offerings to advance the green building proficiency of internal staff responsible for building and design, construction and ongoing operations.

Additional focus areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Advising on sustainability targets and practices for medium and small projects and ongoing operations and maintenance practices.
  • Strategically evaluating building, business and/or infrastructure systems to identify sustainability opportunities, and evaluating program effectiveness and recommending program improvements.
  • Building effective cross-departmental teams to enable successful project outcomes that advance the operational sustainability goals and provide enhanced service levels and operating efficiencies.
  • Developing business cases and grant applications to support built environment sustainability initiatives;
  • Identifying relevant resources and expertise (internal and external) to support portfolio specific needs in advancing sustainability goals.
  • Providing timely, accurate and expert interpretation of applicable legislation and industry best practices.
  • Facilitating and guiding project implementation where appropriate.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of standard operating procedures to improve sustainability performance in business systems.
  • Assisting with enhancement of enterprise data management systems to support effective monitoring and reporting of built environment sustainability key performance indicators, and Coordinating progress reporting on built environment key performance indicators.
  • Participating in the development and evaluation of initiatives, procedures and practices of the Office of Sustainability.
  • Liaising with a variety of on-campus constituents and external agencies when necessary.
  • Supporting campus as a learning lab projects and mentoring technical student interns.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering and/or Architecture is required, graduate degree is preferred.
  • Professional designations in engineering or architecture or eligibility for immediate registration is required. P.Eng is preferred.
  • LEED AP BD+C accreditation is required.  LEED AP O+M accreditation and Certified Energy Manager designation are an asset.
  • Six to eight years work experience leading sustainable buildings and managing LEED and Zero Carbon Building certification's is required, with broad experience across design, construction, and operational phases of a building life cycle and sustainable site design is a requirement.
  • Additional experience with energy retrofits in existing buildings and  greenhouse gas (GHG) quantification and  reporting is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of building (mechanical/electrical) systems and facilities management practices is required.
  • Technical expertise for addressing opportunities and working with engineering and facilities staff is required.
  • Demonstrated experience with working with diverse stakeholders, leading sustainability goal setting charettes with project teams, building effective partnerships and change management is required.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a team member, build positive working relationships with staff and faculty at all levels of the organization as well as the student community is required.
  • An ability to think strategically, employ strong analytical skills, and present clear and concise concepts is required.
  • An ability to adapt to shifting priorities and thrive in a fast-paced environment is required.
  • Experience in financial analysis and business case development is an asset.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate and engage a diverse audience with complex subject matter, confidence in public speaking is required.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision, exercising tact, sound judgment and exceptional decision making skills is required.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and the ability to develop high-quality documents and presentations is required.
  • Must possess strong organizational, time management and project management skills, with the ability to support multiple projects of various types at different stages with an emphasis on accuracy and meeting milestones and deadlines.
  • Familiarity with higher education organizational and operational structures, ability to objectively think through impact of initiatives in an institutional setting a strong asset.
