35 hr/wk, 8-12 week contract (starting mid August - Sept 1, 2021)

Innovate Calgary is the technology transfer and business incubator center for the University of Calgary. As part of the Office of the Vice-President (Research) portfolio, we work with UCalgary researchers, students, and other members, to help bridge the gap between discovery and creating economic and societal impact.

UCEED FUND INTERN
Reporting to the UCeed Senior Fund Managers, UCeed Intern will work closely with the Innovate Calgary team and UCalgary-based startup clients, specifically those invested in by UCeed Funds. The focus for the role is to work with UCeed team to identify, invest and deliver entrepreneurship needs to UCeed portfolio companies. This position is responsible for a diverse set of entrepreneurial-based tasks requiring sound judgment, and strong relationship building skills while collaborating within a high energy environment to help drive Innovate Calgary’s client and portfolio successes.
ABOUT THE UCEED BUSINESS UNIT
Innovate Calgary’s UCeed group is responsible for supporting the operation of the UCeed Funds, pre-seed and seed investment funds, and managing Innovate Calgary’s equity and royalty holdings portfolio. It also provides coaching and mentorship to assist UCeed portfolio companies while supporting organizational metrics and client surveying initiatives to meet donor and stakeholder requirements.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
UCeed Funds:

  • Assist with operating and managing the launch and ongoing operations of new and existing funds
  • Support the selection, evaluation, and investment in new UCeed portfolio companies
  • Help prepare for Steering Committee and IAG (Investment Advisory Groups) meetings

UCeed Portfolio Company Support:

  • Support portfolio companies by coordinating and managing training activities including those that improve their opportunity for success
  • Work with New Venture managers and other team members to coordinate workshops/speaker series in collaboration with Innovate Calgary’s Expert Advisors (EA), internal trainers, or external training partners
  • Attend workshops and networking events to develop relationships with community-based technology and innovation-based organizations
  • Assist with preparing quarterly/annual reports and presentation summaries to the CEO and Board

 

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

The UCeed Intern is passionate about deep technology startups and is committed to helping them to advance into established companies. Accordingly, the position requires an individual with:

  • Analytical abilities with an entrepreneurial mindset
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in an evolving environment with multiple stakeholders
  • Excellent oral and written skills, specifically on communicating key metrics and data sets
  • Keen attitude and willingness to explore outside of their area of expertise
  • Ability to work with and organize large volumes of data and manage concurrent projects
  • Outstanding time management skills and high attention to detail

REQUIRED SKILLS/ QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PowerPoint and pitch deck development experience
  • Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Familiarity with CRM software and Microsoft Office suite of programs
  • Knowledge in results-based accountability and metrics
  • Ability to create reporting documents
  • This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program. Candidates must be aged between 15-30 and be legally entitled to work in Canada, International students are not eligible.
