Sessional Instructor - Fall 2021, Faculty of Nursing

Position Description

The Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary, is seeking a Sessional Instructor to teach undergraduate level courses for the Fall Semester 2021 as follows:

Fall Semester (September 1 - December 31, 2021)
TERM 7 - NURS 589 (Integrating Nursing Roles and Practices V): Oncology 

We are seeking applicants with adult and pediatric inpatient oncology experience, particularly those with previous nursing education practice experience.  Practice education takes place both on and off campus. The schedule for this position is as follows: 

  • Thursday & Friday: off campus clinical (alternating D/E shifts each week)
  • Tuesday 0900-1200: on campus lab activities 

Sessional Instructors are provided with exceptional orientation, mentorship, and ongoing professional development. The amount of remuneration is calculated according to the Collective Agreement, Schedule B.  Please see the Faculty Association's website at for further information regarding conditions of employment and remuneration.

Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate low to high-fidelity simulation activities within the Clinical Simulation Learning Centre
  • Work effectively with small groups of students on-campus or in off campus settings in acute care, chronic care, long-term care or community 
  • Participate in team meetings related to the practice course and faculty governance
  • Participate in student assessment and evaluations on and off campus
  • Seek excellence in teaching by applying various teaching strategies and working with colleagues
  • Encourage and foster an environment of inquiry and valuing of evidence informed practice 

Candidates must be eligible for registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta.  A Master's degree is normally required and preferred, although candidates with BN/BScN preparation will be considered.

Applied Experience:   

  • Current practice experience related to semester focus
  • Broad experience across a variety of areas
  • Experience in clinical teaching, mentoring and supervision of students

Enhanced Abilities:    

  • Application of adult teaching/learning principles
  • Use of nursing process and conceptual frameworks assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation
  • Communication and collaboration skills with other health professionals
  • Teamwork and leadership skills
  • Evaluation and promotions of student problem solving and critical thinking
  • Ability to critique student performance and provide meaningful feedback
  • Prioritizing and meeting competing demands/requirements of varied settings
  • Computer skills in word processing, email and internet access
