Position Overview

The Department of Geogrpahy in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a Research Associate, Ocean Acidification Community of Practice Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Associate will support the activities of the Canadian Ocean Acidification Community of Practice, a MEOPAR initiative.  

The Research Associate will ideally be located in Calgary, although remote work for this position will be considered. Applicants who are located in Calgary (or intend to relocate) as well as those interested in working remotely are both encouraged to respond to this job posting.

Primary Purpose of the Position: 
The Research Associate will be responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the Canadian Ocean Acidification Community of Practice (CoP). This CoP works across the many domains of Ocean Acidification (OA) research, from the chemistry of acidification, through its biological impacts, to industry and policy concerns. It brings together multiple sectors (government, academia, industry, non-profit), disciplines (chemistry, biology, technology development, social vulnerabilities, policy development) and regions (Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic).  The overarching goals of the CoP are to coordinate actors across all sectors, disciplines, and regions to share expertise and data, to identify pressing needs for OA research/knowledge, and to create a collaborative and supportive environment for groups affected by ocean acidification.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Expand the membership and engagement of the Community of Practice by identifying, contacting, and inviting ocean acidification researchers and data users from government, academia, industry and non-profit groups.
  • Manage online communication platforms (e.g. forums, blogs, social media) and websites to advertise and coordinate the activities of the CoP, promoting dialogue and engagement between members.
  • Gather information from the Community to build a catalogue of ongoing ocean acidification research and physical infrastructure in Canada.
  • Assist with the development of data sharing networks and interoperability standards to ensure accessibility of ocean acidification data for researchers and stakeholders.
  • Facilitate the development of "best practices" documents for experiments, sample collection, and sensor development.
  • Organize and host webinars on topics of interest to the Community of Practice, and provide updates to the Community of other relevant webinars or content.
  • Organize national and regional Ocean Acidification workshops or meetings, and present on behalf of the Community at conferences, meetings, science symposiums or science exchange fairs.
  • Represent the Community in a professional and supportive capacity, interacting and contributing to other large ocean acidification science communities, such as the OA Information Exchange, OA Alliance and the GOA-ON North American Hub.
  • Be able to search, collate, and provide written reports on scientific information on climate vulnerabilities in North America.
  • Develop and lead implementation of plans of action for specific items requested by co-leads and the Community.
  • Write reports or scientific publications, and provide timely updates to co-leads and Community as requested.
  • Assist with grant writing to support the initiatives of the CoP.
  • Ensure that work assigned is completed within acceptable time frames and as required to professional research standards, meeting all University standards and processes.
  • Respectfully interact with co-workers, members of the University community, members of the public and outside agencies/organizations.
     

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • We seek individuals with a graduate or undergraduate degree in marine science, including social science.
  • The ideal candidate will have research experience in a field related to ocean acidification or climate change, and already have some connections to the Canadian ocean acidification research community.
  • Candidates require strong organizational and communication skills, initiative, writing ability, and the ability to work independently.
  • Experience with data management, research outreach, and/or communications would be an asset.
