Position Description

Area: Primary Care/Implementation Science

Duration: 2 years with possibility of extension

Start Date: Immediately

Salary: $$55,000/year plus extended health care benefits and conference support

The Department of Family Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the areas of primary care/implementation science.  The Postdoctoral Scholar will be supervised by Dr. Kerry McBrien and Dr. Stephanie Montesanti. Dr. McBrien is a family physician and Associate Professor with a focus on innovative models of care that improve access to services for patients in primary care. Dr. Montesanti is an Associate Professor and Scientist with the Centre for Health Communities in the University of Alberta School of Public Health.  She is an applied health policy and systems researcher with a focus on addressing complex healthcare problems in primary healthcare and community settings. The successful candidate will work within a dynamic team supported by leading researchers who are exploring the impact and scalability of a community health navigation program for patients with chronic disease in primary care.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will:

  • Be engaged in research full-time (1.0 FTE)
  • Develop a detailed project plan in keeping with the planned program objectives
  • Collaborate with partner organizations in primary care to create data collection procedures
  • Critically select and apply robust quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis methods
  • Critically evaluate the literature and be familiar with implementation science methods and concepts
  • Develop manuscripts for publication
  • Prepare conference and partner presentations 
  • Disseminate findings to decision makers and through presentations
  • Supervise and mentor research assistants and trainees who are assisting with data analysis, writing and additional research activities
  • Work independently
  • Apply to local, provincial and national funding competitions
  • Other activities as required

Qualifications:

  • PhD (completed within the last 3 years) with a specialization in areas related to implementation science, public health and/or epidemiology
  • Experience with program evaluation
  • Excellent time management skills and able to work in a self-directed manner within an interdisciplinary environment
  • Strong team player
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, especially in scientific writing
  • Strong track record of scholarly activities including publication of research findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations
  • Experience in applying for external grants and awards
