Position Description

Area:  Quantum Information Science

Duration:  2 years (with possibility for extension)

Start Date:  As soon as possible

Salary:  53,000 $ to 60,000 $ per year plus Plan C Postdoctoral Health Benefits

 

The Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Free-space quantum satellite communication.

Job Description:

The postdoc will be responsible for quantum information research conducted with free-space optical links for satellites, with primary supervision by Dr. Daniel Oblak and co-supervision by Dr. Barry Sanders. The responsibilities include operation of the existing ground-station in partnership with national and international collaborators and the realization of experiments that interface free-space links with fiber-optic channels, entangled photon-pair sources, quantum-dot sources, and quantum memory. The postdoc will also be involved in planning and designing a future upgraded ground-station including theoretical modelling and assisting with presenting findings in international journals and conferences. Qualifications:

  • Recent PhD* in quantum optics, quantum information or related area of study is required
  • Experience with optical telescope systems, free-space optical links, adaptive optics, single-photon detection, or quantum communication is an asset
  • Experience in detailed design, documentation, and implementation of complex technological research systems is essential
  • A record of significant publications in relevant field and a history of providing daily supervision of graduate students is essential
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to think critically and creatively under pressure while exercising good judgment and discretion
