Position Overview

The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for an Implementation Facilitator. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Research Program Manager, Division of Palliative Medicine.  

The Implementation Facilitator will support a Choosing Wisely Alberta-funded quality improvement project to implement the use of “Advanced Cancer Shared Care Letters” for advanced colorectal cancer in outpatient cancer clinics. These letters help to connect patients, oncology and family practice teams to enhance care coordination and stimulate a palliative approach to care, alongside cancer therapies.

The Implementation Facilitator will support oncology nurses and doctors to implement the shared care letters (patient and physician versions https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/assets/info/cca/if-cca-shared-care-advanced-cancer-prov.pdf, https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/assets/info/hp/cancer/if-hp-cancer-guide-metastatic-colorectal-letter-physician.pdf) in their clinics. The Implementation Facilitator will be an integral member of the shared care letter project team consisting of clinicians and researchers from across Edmonton, Calgary, and Central Zones. 

The available position is located in Edmonton. 

This is a recurring part-time position.  Recurring Part-time employees are hourly employee engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.  This position is anticipated to work 7-10 hours per week.  

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Support local implementation of the advanced cancer shared care letters in outpatient cancer clinics 
  • Weekly evaluation of project metrics and periodic feedback to clinicians 
  • Suggest improvements for local implementation 
  • Identifying patient needs 
  • Attending regular project team meetings on behalf of the local site
  • Providing in-clinic training and support to clinic teams (physicians, nurses, administrative staff), adapted to their existing workflow
  1. Coaching staff to:
    • Identify eligible patients (i.e. those living with an advanced, likely incurable, cancer) and
    • Order the shared care letter (physician and patient versions).
  2. Collecting data to support our evaluation of primary and secondary outcomes:
    • Primary outcome = the number of shared care letters ordered per number of eligible patients (accessed through ARIA MO)
    • Secondary outcomes include: the percentage of oncologists who order the shared care letter (ARIA MO), and the family physician response rate (fax back cover letter, ARIA MO)
  • Manage, enter and analyse study data
  • Generate various reports (including on weekly outcomes) as required by Principal Investigator and research team
  • Maintain source documents and ensure all aspects of privacy and data integrity are adhered to
  • Establish and maintain good communication and working relationships with study investigator(s), research team members, healthcare providers, subjects/patients and other stakeholders

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Completion of an accredited nursing education program; active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) or College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA)
  • Minimum 5-7 years of Nursing experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in the outpatient setting at either the Cross Cancer Institute or Central Alberta Cancer Centre required
  • Experience using ARIA Oncology Information System required
  • Knowledge of and passion for palliative care would be an asset
  • Quality improvement and/or change management experience or certification (e.g. AIW, PROSCI) would be an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to problem solve in complex situations
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills and an ability to exercise judgement within established guidelines
  • A positive attitude and ability to work independently and part of a team are critical to success
