Position Overview

The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Bioinformatician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator, with accountabilities from both investigators.  

The bioinformatician will design and implement workflows for multi-omic datasets generated through iSARP and those acquired from public data repositories. The Bioinformatician will work closely and collaboratively with PIs within and outside of iSARP, as well as their staff and trainees, to facilitate their informatics needs towards the translational medicine goals of the Charbonneau Cancer Institute and the iSARP initiative. They will innovate within the genomics, machine learning, and translational medicine space and will be given autonomy to develop and test their own ideas under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Design and implement pipelines for analysis of next-generation sequencing datasets, including genomes, transcriptomes, proteomes, and single cell sequencing datasets
  • Work with both pre-clinical and clinical samples and datasets
  • Develop computational workflows, protocols, and recommend workflow improvements
  • Take responsibility for successful completion of projects from the conception stage through the submission of deliverables and to project closure
  • Act as liaison between research team, national, and international collaborators
  • Monitor and control the schedule and quality of projects undertaken by the research team
  • Work collaboratively with other research associates within iSARP to achieve shared goals
  • Work collaboratively with multiple PIs and their teams on diverse projects related to their informatics analysis needs towards translational medicine
  • Analyze experimental data and report it to supervisors (Morrissy) and the iSARP team
  • Represent research team, and present research at local, national and international meetings
  • Contribute to data assembly and writing of scientific manuscripts and grants

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD degree Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Molecular Biology, or related field required
  • Minimum 5 years of related research experience, including experience in data science, genomics, bioinformatics, or machine learning
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (such as Python or R)
  • Experience with Linux / Unix working environments, and high-performance computing clusters
  • Expertise with analysis and algorithm development on complex NGS datasets
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Detail oriented, organized, and strong written communication skills as evidences by a record of publication and scholarship
  • Track record of presenting research at local and national meetings
