Position Description
The Departments of Oncology and Family Medicine, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary in conjunction with Cancer Care Alberta, Alberta Health Services at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the Clinical Departments of Oncology and Family Medicine, Calgary Zone, invite applications for a full-time Contingent Term academic position within the discipline of Palliative Medicine, at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level.
We are seeking a physician scientist with health services research or clinical trials design experience to join us in research, including developing, implementing and evaluating innovations in palliative care and palliative medicine. The successful candidate will be also be appointed as a physician consultant to the Alberta Health Services Calgary Zone Palliative and End of Life Care (PEOLC) service.
The Division of Palliative Medicine members and PEOLC physicians are a highly collegial group contributing to research, education and clinical care. Our integrated program offers diverse research opportunities in cancer and chronic diseases and innovative models of care delivery, from advance care planning to grief support.
Qualifications include an MD and eligibility for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Certification with the College of Family Physicians (CCFP) and /or Certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) are required. Training/experience in Palliative Medicine is required. In order to qualify to become a member of the Calgary Zone Palliative Care cARP, a physician needs to have CCFP-PC designation (certificate of added competency in palliative care with the CFPC) or have completed Royal College subspecialty training in adult palliative medicine; Royal College physicians who completed a one-year conjoint palliative care training program will be considered.
Applicants at the Assistant Professor level will have up to five years of training or experience in Palliative Medicine or special competency in one of the Oncology disciplines (or equivalent) and commensurate evidence of successful teaching and graduate supervision, evidence of established academic engagement in professional and other communities.
Applicants at the Associate Professor level must have five plus years of training or experience in Palliative Medicine or special competency in one of the Oncology disciplines (or equivalent) and commensurate evidence of successful teaching and graduate supervision, evidence of established academic engagement in professional and other communities.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant cancer research environment at the University of Calgary that is rapidly expanding in anticipation of the opening of a New Calgary Cancer Centre (NCCC) in 2023. The NCCC is over 1.3 million square feet in size and includes 110,000 square feet of purpose built wet and dry research space. Areas of research emphasis in the NCCC, in addition to palliative care includes basic cancer biology, early cancer detection, precision oncology & experimental therapeutics, immune oncology, cancer epidemiology and prevention, psychosocial oncology and survivorship, childhood cancer and blood disorders, and investigator-led programs in cancers of the prostate, kidney, bladder, lung, breast, colon, brain, multiple myeloma, and others. Other strengths in the environment are Alberta’s strengths in health services data, bioinformatics, Alberta Cancer Outcomes Research Network (ACORN) and seven large health research institutes including the Arne Charbonneau Cancer Institute and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health.
