Position Description

The Department of Medicine, University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services, Calgary, invites applications from outstanding investigators for a Tenure Track (contingent) position as an academic nephrologist/translational researcher at the Assistant Professor level.  The successful candidate will be a member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute and O’Brien Institute for Public Health.

Qualifications include an MD, FRCPC certification in Nephrology and eligibility for specialist licensure in the province of Alberta, as well as an MSc and research experience in the area of translational (bench to bedside) research in chronic kidney disease, reproductive health and cardiovascular disease. The successful applicant must demonstrate evidence of publishing papers that have influenced the field and provided information that may be of interest to clinical and basic science audiences. The successful candidate must demonstrate evidence of an ability to collaborate, potential to lead a research team, and effectiveness in teaching at the University level. The successful candidate will be an individual who has expertise in clinical nephrology. Specifically, the Division of Nephrology is interested in a researcher who has expertise in mechanisms of chronic kidney disease as it relates to reproductive health and the relationship with cardiovascular disease. The recruit should be familiar with the Canadian health care system and be able to establish an independent research program that will produce high quality research. 

The recruitment of such an individual will align with clinical needs within the Division of Nephrology and the combined research needs of the Division, the Department of Medicine, the Libin Cardiovascular Institute and O’Brien Institute for Public Health. An individual with this academic profile will align strongly with the strategic research priorities of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute and O’Brien Institute for Public Health, as well as more broadly with the University of Calgary’s university-wide strategic research plan. Further, the proposed position will also strongly align with two of the university’s priority themes, increasing research capacity and driving innovation. The successful applicant should have a strong publication record with at least 10-accepted/pending peer-reviewed publications, the majority as first or lead author.  The successful candidate is expected to have academic outputs which will enable them to be competitive for external research support – and specifically tri-council funding.  

An attractive remuneration and benefits package through the University of Calgary - Alberta Health Services AMHSP will apply and is competitive with those pursuing fee-for-service billing models.

Alberta Health Services operates five teaching hospitals in the city of Calgary, including the new South Health Campus acute care facility. AHS serves 1.8 million residents of Southern Alberta, Southeastern British Columbia and Southwestern Saskatchewan.  The Department of Medicine provides academic and clinical services in an integrated manner across all of the hospital sites and in several ambulatory care settings.
