Position Overview

The Department of Clinical Neurosciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Therapist. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Laboratory Manager.  

The Research Therapist will be a part of the study team, and will be responsible for maintaining a consistent standard for clinical assessments done on study participants, as well as making sure clinical assessment materials are up to date, and in working order.  The Research Therapist will need strong communication skill and client service skills as they will be interacting with individuals with varying degrees of deficits, such as aphasia, or decreased attention.  The Research Therapists will also need excellent analytical and documentation skills, to maintain high quality records of all assessments, so that any irregularities noted will be able to noted by the Principal Investigator, or lab trainees.

This is a recurring part time position, working up to 21 hours a week.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Deliver clinical assessments for a variety of research projects
  • Understand study protocols for each project, and timing of when measures need to be collected
  • Make sure study participants feel comfortable, and can communicate effectively with study participants
  • Ensure safety of study participants at all times
  • Ensure that the data is handled carefully at all times
  • Responsible to maintain established programs and procedures
  • Ensure safe and proper use of all research therapy equipment
  • Make sure all study equipment is maintained and kept in working order
  • Ensure that work assigned is completed in timely manner
  • Ensures that the Principal Investigator and study coordinator is kept informed of activities and progress of work
  • Ensures that they are pleasant and respectful of all clients and co-workers

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor or Master's level degree in Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy with at least 10 years of experience
  • Highly evolved skills in rehabilitation, with experience in neurorehabilitation
  • Experience in several different types assessments such as the Chedoke McMaster Stroke Assessment, Action Research Arm Test, Fugl Meyer Assessment of Motor Recovery is preferred, but will provide training if not experienced with these
  • Possess strong analytical skills and documentation skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal, negotiation, time management and organizational skills
  • Commit to understands University operating procedures
  • Current knowledge of standards of rehabilitation care and rehabilitation research
  • Demonstrated leader in rehabilitation with the ability to direct others in a rehabilitation setting
  • Ability to multi-task and deal with multiple simultaneous priorities in an effective manner
  • Possess good working knowledge of Microsoft Office / Windows Operating System and familiar with Mac IOS.
  • Practices within the legal and ethical parameters of either the Alberta College of Physiotherapists or Occupational Therapists
