Position Description
The Department of Paediatrics (http://www.ucalgary.ca/paed) in conjunction with the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI; http://research4kids.ucalgary.ca), the O’Brien Institute for Public Health (https://obrieniph.ucalgary.ca/), and the Indigenous, Local and Global Health Office (ILGH;http://cumming.ucalgary.ca/community) at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary invite applications for a Contingent Term appointment a 0.8 FTE Academic Clinician-Scientist at the Associate Professor level to advance an academic/research program in Paediatric Global Health. Alignment of the applicant’s academic/research focus with the priorities of the Department of Paediatrics, ACHRI, ILGH, the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, and the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and the University of Calgary is expected (http://cumming.ucalgary.ca/deans-office/strategic-plan; https://research.ucalgary.ca/sites/default/files/teams/1/Child-Health-and-Wellness-Strategy.pdf).
Qualifications include an MD and certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Pediatrics. The preferred candidate must present evidence of an established, externally funded (at the level of Tri-Council or equivalent peer reviewed National/international organization) research program, a strong publication record and a successful teaching track record. This is an academic role responsible for academic output including the generation and dissemination of new knowledge both at home and within partnership communities and setting the vision for pediatric global health post pandemic. As such, applicants should have evidence of an established track record of academic engagement and partnership with the Global Health community. Applicants must have strong leadership skills including managing large projects and teams to execute a strategic direction, expertise in global health research and scholarship, experience in mentoring of all learners and importantly experience collaborating within a global health partnership in a low/middle income setting.
This position would maintain a research focus, assume leadership and promote growth in conjunction with existing highly successful thematic programs in Paediatric Global Health within the Department of Paediatrics and the University of Calgary. Importantly, the successful candidate must possess prior experience, or show evidence of growing experience, in running a focused, well-established and independently funded research or development program in Global Health. Additionally, the successful candidate must have particular academic expertise in their field with a national or international reputation and will be expected to contribute meaningfully to medical student, resident and fellow training. This is an excellent opportunity to help lead and grow a program within an outstanding collaborative environment. Start-up package and space are available through the Department of Paediatrics and ACHRI and will be commensurate with experience and the research needs. Additional membership in the O’Brien Institute for Public Health (http://obrieniph.ucalgary.ca/) is encouraged when appropriate.
The Department of Paediatrics is based at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and provides care to the children of Southern Alberta and neighbouring Saskatchewan/British Columbia. At present, the Department is comprised of over 350 clinical and academic faculty members who are part of the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary and an extensive team of trainees and administrative staff. The Department’s Paediatric Global Child Health Unit has multiple physician-educators and researchers involved in many different programs including simulation, distance learning, care guidelines and implementation in a number of sites across the globe. The Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute is home to more than 330 child health researchers and is facilitating the University wide Child Health and Wellness Strategy aiming to improve the outcome of children and families.
