Position Description
The Department of Medicine (http://www.departmentofmedicine.com), in partnership with the Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases in the Cumming School of Medicine, and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services (http://www.albertahealthservices.ca) invites applications for a Tenure Track (contingent) position as an Infectious Disease Clinician-Scientist at the Assistant Professor level with specific expertise in HIV-outcomes and translational research.
The necessary qualifications required for the position include an MD and either an MSc or PhD, certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Internal Medicine (or equivalent certification from another professional association), the completion of a certificate of special competency in Infectious Diseases and eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta.
The successful candidate will be an individual who has expertise in HIV and AIDS outpatient and inpatient care. Specifically, the Department is interested in a researcher who has expertise in the collection and analysis of large datasets, and factors influencing outcomes with translational research potential. The recruit should be familiar with the Canadian health care system and be able to establish an independent research program that will produce high quality research. The successful candidate is expected to adhere to the Alberta Health Services Bylaws and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Code of Conduct.
Candidates must have evidence of strong clinical training and prior supervisory experience. The candidate must have evidence of significant academic potential (including a minimum of 25 peer-reviewed publications with the majority as 1st or senior author), excellent grantsmanship with the capacity to develop an independently funded research program and evidence of an emerging or established academic program of HIV-related research. The position provides up to 65% protected time for research. This is an excellent opportunity to develop and expand an independent externally-funded research program within an outstanding collaborative environment that is the University of Calgary.
Primary clinical responsibilities will at various times include; providing inpatient infectious disease consultancy services, (including weekend & night call), practicing within a busy but highly effective outpatient antimicrobial treatment program and outpatient HIV clinics administered through the auspices of the Southern Alberta HIV Clinic (SAC), working collaboratively with allied health colleagues and supervising and educating medical trainees. The ability to work collaboratively with other infectious disease/microbiology/clinical epidemiology colleagues is a must, and the successful applicant will be expected to be a regular contributor to ID section rounds and presentations. Remuneration will be via the Department of Medicine’s Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP). This funding is competitively valued based on the successful candidate’s level of experience (based on a formal pay level grid).
Alberta Health Services operates five teaching hospitals in the city of Calgary, including the new South Health Campus acute care facility. AHS serves 1.8 million residents of Southern Alberta, Southeastern British Columbia and Southwestern Saskatchewan. Outpatient HIV care is centralized at the Southern Alberta HIV Clinic (SAC) which provides longitudinal consultancy level care for the 2300 individuals living with HIV in Southern Alberta. The Department of Medicine provides academic and clinical services in an integrated manner across all of the hospital sites and in several ambulatory care settings.
