Position Overview

The Department of Medical Genetics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate, Electrophysiologist. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 24 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator. 

Research Associate will help procure and set up a new electrophysiology rig for use in zebrafish and brain organoids in PI’s laboratory. Research Associate will also establish electrophysiology protocols for robust recording from brain organoids, as well as train other lab members on these protocols.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for management, maintenance, or control of all electrophysiology equipment and procedures
  • Involved in day-to-day supervision of trainees and staff, monitoring, planning, and organizing activities of others
  • Assist with plans and designs for specialized applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and services
  • Budget involvement including developing reports, tracking expenses, and reconciliation of accounts
  • Responsible for presentations in producing figures for publication
  • Produce initial drafts of manuscripts for publication and appropriate scientific journals
  • Participate in the design and development of precision equipment and processes
  • Recommend changes to methods, procedures, and practices within the lab
  • Responsible of the organization of the day-to-day administration of the laboratory
  • Responsible for ordering, and stock checking
  • Responsible for repairs of equipment, ensuring safety compliance
  • Under limited supervision and direction, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications
  • Oversee reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment for various users, including stocking of all necessary materials and supplies
  • Trains and supervises other staff, students, and Faculty in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD degree in a relevant discipline required
  • Minimum 10 years e-phys experience across rodents, zebrafish and cells
  • 1-3 years training /mentoring lab members in e-phys techniques
  • 1 to 3 years of supervisory experience
  • Minimum 4 - 5 years of post-doctoral experience in a relevant research area 
  • Minimum 7 years of technical experience and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline
  • Minimum 7 years of related technical experience within the research specialty field
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques
  • Operate and maintain complex technical equipment
  • Experience with various biological samples (eg. blood, tissues, urine, etc)
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
