Position Overview

The Department of Critical Care Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring part-time position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reports to the Principal Investigator.

This is a recurring part time position with variable hours.  Recurring part time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.  

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Study Related Duties

  • Submit human research ethics applications, amendments and renewals. Maintain study ethics approvals and reporting

  • Submit Alberta Health Services approvals and maintain approvals

  • Facilitation of study data collection, de-identification of data, data cleaning, entry, and analysis including data requests

Data Analysis and Presentation

  • Generate PowerPoint presentations and reports on behalf of the Principal Investigator and research team, to be used when presenting to various internal and external stakeholders

  • Assist with presenting as required

  • Compile tables, charts, graphs and summarized statistics for integration in research papers and reports. This includes materials for presentation and publication

  • Process data using statistical software to conduct basic analyses of trends in support of the research project (eg. descriptive epidemiology, basic comparative and multivariate analyses)

  • Create initial drafts of study manuscripts with the assistance of study team members and the Principal Investigator

  • Assist with grant submissions as needed. This may include creating grant budgets, timelines, appendixes and obtaining letters of support from partners

Literature Reviews

  • Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will lead literature / systematic reviews by

    • Drafting and submitting review protocols

    • Working with a librarian to develop searches and inclusion and exclusion criteria

    • Performing and leading title and abstract screening

    • Performing full-text screening and analysis

¿Teamwork and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate reports to manager and Principal Investigator within Department of Critical Care Medicine and outside of our department

  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities and progress of work

  • Ability to problem solve and make decisions in complex situations

  • Strong communication and team skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor Degree in a health-related field is required
  • Master’s Degree in a health-data related field (eg epidemiology or informatics) is a strong asset
  • Minimum 2 years of related experience
  • Experience in handling and analyzing data from a clinical environment is an asset; specific experience with critical care data is preferred
  • Experience working with SPSS, STATA, R, and/or Python, preferred
  • Experience conducting literature reviews or knowledge of literature reviews are an asset
  • Experience writing scientific journal articles for publication
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and EndNote
  • Experience submitting human research ethics and Alberta Health Services Operational approvals and health data access requests
  • Knowledgeable around regulations for granting agencies (eg. Tri Council) and experience assisting in grant or studentship submission is an asset
  • Demonstrated strong communication and team skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Demonstrated critical and innovative thinking is an asset
  • Demonstrated time management and project management skills are an asset
