Position Overview

The Department of Surgery in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reports to the Principal Investigator.

The Research Coordinator requires management, organizational, advisory, and analytical research support services to a wide range of projects. 

Must be able to work with minimal supervision, to be responsible for own workload and deadlines, and to make judgement calls about various aspects of projects and tasks.

This position is for approximately 24 hours a week.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management with the campus and hospital community
  • Ensure all aspects of studies are efficiently managed, accounted for and followed through on; create documents related to studies; apply for, and maintain, ethics approvals
  • Recruit participants and maintain positive and ethical research relationship, manage all data collection, conduct quantitative and qualitative interviews and focus groups and participate in all coding and analysis. Participate in data analysis and publication
  • Seek out and pursue additional funding opportunities
  • Liaise with a variety of stakeholders to gather input and advise on policies and procedures; provide education to stakeholders on surgical techniques and related issues
  • Prepare technical documents and monitor reports on volumetrics and other trend analyses
  • Provide mentoring and direction to others
  • Generate PowerPoint presentations on behalf of Principal Investigator and research team, to be used when presenting to various internal and external stakeholders
  • Assist with presenting as required; ability to present independently to wide range of stakeholders
  • Compile tables, charts, graphs, and summarize statistics for integration in research papers and reports.  This includes materials for presentation and publication
  • Process data using statistical and coding software to conduct basic analyses of trends in support of the research project
  • Collect, consolidate, cross-tabulate and format data from various sources to prepare draft reports
  • Creation and maintenance of multiple databases
  • Assist in collection and tracking of data from monitored use of services and provide information to various internal and external stakeholders
  • Participate in manuscript writing, as senior and junior author

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters degree required
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Experience with qualitative research including semi-structured interviewing and focus groups
  • Experience with transcribing, coding and analyzing focus group and interview transcripts
  • Experience with enrollment of patients into randomized controlled trials and quality improvement projects
  • Experience crafting, organizing, and carrying out all aspects of research studies including clinical trials
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), internet skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability for professional academic writing
  • Knowledge of research ethics and regulations for granting agencies (eg. Tri Council)
  • Ability to problem solve in complex situations
  • Knowledge of the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services processes and procedures
