Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Lab Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator. 

The Lab Technicians primary purpose is to be responsible for the management, maintenance, or control of a specialized area. This may include in-scope supervision of other lab staff, managing the laboratory and research projects as well as ensuring that as technologies change, the laboratory adapts to and learns the new technologies. The incumbent may support other research projects by providing knowledge, skills, and on-the-job training to others. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for management, maintenance, or control of a specialized area
  • Involved in day-to-day supervision of staff, monitoring, planning, and organizing activities of others
  • Assist with plans and designs for specialized applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and services
  • Perform the following experimental tasks:
    • Animal Care
    • Animal gavage
    • Animal surgery
    • DNA/RNA isolation from whole tissue +/- PCR or qPCR
    • Immune cell isolation and antibody staining
    • Flow Cytometry data acquisition and analysis
    • Basic immunofluorescent histology sample prep and image acquisition
    • Bacterial culture  
  • Budget involvement including developing reports, tracking expenses, and reconciliation of accounts
  • Participate in the design and development of precision equipment and experimental procedures
  • Recommend changes to methods, procedures, and practices within the lab
  • Under limited supervision and direction, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications
  • Oversee reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment for various users, including stocking of all necessary materials and supplies
  • Trains and supervises other staff, students, and Faculty in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols
  • Keep laboratory and work area clean and safe
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community
     

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree –Bachelors of Science 
  • Masters Degree –Science (not mandatory but preferred)
  • Minimum 2 years of technical experience and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline
  • 3 to 5 years of related technical experience within the research specialty field preferred
  • 1 to 3 years of supervisory experience
  • Experience or trained to perform the some/all of the following experimental task an asset: 
    • Animal Care
    • Animal gavage
    • Animal surgery
    • DNA/RNA isolation from whole tissue +/- PCR or qPCR
    • Immune cell isolation and antibody staining
    • Flow Cytometry data acquisition and analysis
    • Basic immunofluorescent histology sample prep and image acquisition
    • Bacterial culture  
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex procedures, experiments and technological systems
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments.
  • Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization
  • Operate and maintain complex technical equipment
  • Experience with various biological samples (eg. blood, tissues, urine, etc)
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, organization, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
  • WHIMS Certification (which can be obtained post onboarding)
