Duration: One-year, with possibility of renewal

Salary: 50,000 $CAD per annum, plus University of Calgary Plan C health benefits
 

The Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Entrepreneurship and Innovation .

Job Description:

This postdoctoral scholar position will be part of a research team to support a SSHRC Insight grant funding the project “Building gender-inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystems in Canada.” Dr. Chad Saunders of the Haskayne School of Business will be the primary supervisor for the postdoctoral scholar and Dr. Karen Hughes will co-supervise. Dr. Saunders is located at the University of Calgary and is an expert on entrepreneurial support and policy.  Dr. Hughes is the Alex Hamilton Professor at the Alberta School of Business (University of Alberta) and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Diana International Research Institute (DIRI) at Babson College. She has published widely on issues relating to gender, entrepreneurship, and economic change. 

This project utilizes data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Canada and will provide an excellent opportunity to contribute to innovative analysis and publication activity, and to gain familiarity with the GEM Canada (www.gemcanada.org) and GEM projects (www.gemconsortium.com). The primary responsibilities of the postdoctoral scholar will include:
 
•    Planning of research activities and survey design; 
•    Planning and assisting with data collection and analysis of results; working with the survey vendor to ensure data quality; 
•    Writing research papers and reports; 
•    Preparation of presentations and peer reviewed publications; 
•    Assisting with proposal preparation for new research activities (including assisting in the preparation of research grant applications and contract proposals); and 
•    Presenting research results in seminars, scientific conferences and or related settings and communities.  

The specific objectives of the position are to:

•    Develop and implement data collection instruments to evaluate gender-inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystems in Canada
•    Collect, analyze, and interpret data using primarily quantitative methods approaches
•    Develop an action and evaluation plan for implementation of evaluate gender-inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystems in Canada

Time will be provided for the postdoctoral scholar to continue to build and advance their own program of work. The successful scholar will be encouraged to apply for national/international awards.


Qualifications:

•    Recent* PhD in entrepreneurship and innovation or related field is required (Completed PhD by commencement of the position is required).
•    Experience working with interdisciplinary research teams
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills
•    Ability to work independently as part of a research team
•    Desire to learn new research methods related to Indigenous ways of knowing, strengths-based and collaborative research, and contribute to learning of others in an interdisciplinary research team

Asset Qualifications:

•    Experience and knowledge of academic research and policy on gender and entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurial ecosystems is considered an asset 
•    Skills and knowledge in quantitative (survey) research approaches is considered an asset
•    Experience with research ethics boards and following ethics protocols is considered an asset

This is a one-year appointment with the opportunity for renewal based on satisfactory performance and available funding. The successful candidate would be expected to apply for the University of Calgary’s Eyes High Postdoctoral Match-Funding Program.
