Position Description

The Faculty of Arts is seeking applications for a four-year, full-time Contingent Term Instructor appointment, with the anticipated start date of July 1, 2022. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Religious Studies, South Asian Studies, or a related discipline with a focus on Sikhism. Candidates who are near completion of their program will be considered; however, preference will be given to candidates with a completed degree.

Candidates should demonstrate scholarship and teaching expertise that centres on Sikhism, either within an historical or modern context. The ideal candidate will be committed to building a decolonized curriculum in South Asian religious traditions, contributing to interdisciplinary programs at the University of Calgary, and to community-building with the Sikh community in Alberta. The candidate must have experience as an effective teacher of Sikhism and Religious Studies and will be expected to teach courses in Sikhism and South Asian Religious traditions, and other Religious Studies courses. Candidates should outline their academic research, teaching experience, and partnership or engagement with Sikh communities.

The successful candidate must provide evidence of a record of excellence in:

  • Teaching and student mentorship
  • Engagement with, or connections to, Sikh communities

Excellent teaching can be demonstrated through course development, evidence of teaching effectiveness and pedagogical innovation, and measures used to create an inclusive learning environment.

Community engagement can be demonstrated in various ways, including community-building initiatives, community partnerships, organization of symposia, learning opportunities or other related activities.

  • A letter of interest that details how you meet the requirements of the position and lists names and contact information of three academic referees
  • An up-to-date curriculum vitae
  • A teaching dossier, which at minimum must include a statement of teaching philosophy and pedagogical methods, evidence of teaching courses with Sikh content, two sample course syllabi, and summaries of quantitative and qualitative results of two sets of course evaluations
  • Evidence of community engagement with Sikh communities or organizations
  • Two representative samples of scholarly publication (if available)
  • A one-page statement identifying the applicant’s potential contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), plans to incorporate EDI in courses taught, and ability to work with a culturally diverse and international student body
