Position Overview

The Content and Publications Unit within the Office of Advancement is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Digital Specialist.

The Communications division within Advancement drives engagement with the campus and the wider community, through the stories we tell, the life-changing experiences and discoveries we share, the events we host, and opportunities we promote for people to direct their gifts toward research and education programs that transform society.

Reporting to the Managing Editor, UCalgary News, the Digital Specialist is responsible for providing a range of expertise and support in the areas of digital content design, production, distribution, and measurement. 

This individual will work closely with the News Managing Editor, the Assistant Editor, arch magazine Senior Editor, and other members of the Content and Publication team as required. The Digital Specialist works within a fast-paced environment that is responsible for publishing multimedia news and feature packages on the university¿s online news and magazine channels, in support of content engagement and brand awareness.

The specialist brings a service-first approach to their work while juggling multiple tasks and projects. The person will be expected to work courteously and professionally under tight deadlines, managing a variable workload, using tact and diplomacy while respecting confidentialities. This individual will also work collaboratively with other members within the Office of Advancement as well as with institute and faculty leaders across campus as required. 

Other key attributes are attention to detail, producing error-free work under constant deadline pressure, a flair for creating visual impact, and a strong desire to continuously improve their knowledge base and skill sets. 

At times this position may deal with confidential materials that call for discretion and sound judgment.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Working in Drupal 8, design and create article packages and website pages that reflect Advancement's strategic priorities and best practices in university communications
  • Using the Marketo platform, oversee daily and monthly newsletter content builds as well as distribution campaigns on behalf of UCalgary News and arch online. Update distribution lists within Marketo
  • Update key online news and magazine content assets on a daily, weekly, and monthly cadence
  • Co-ordinate with other content-generating units at the university to integrate related multimedia assets such as image galleries, video, and podcasts
  • Help to define, execute and support the unit's linking and SEO strategies using tools such as topic tags, metadata fields, and related content
  • Liaise with colleagues in IT Web Support or Digital Experience to monitor, manage and resolve emerging technical issues or website problems. File and manage IT tickets on behalf of the Content and Publications team
  • Act as the team's primary knowledge source when responding to questions from other web specialists who are integrating news tools on their university sites
  • Maintain an ongoing services blueprint
  • Regularly share reports and analytics within the unit for internal communication/co-ordination initiatives
  • Using the Google Analytics and Marketo platforms, work closely with the Managing Editor to monitor and produce regular reports about website performance, traffic trends, website errors, best SEO practices, and our progress on key metric goals.
  • Advise on, and help execute, strategies to reflect the department's goals in the areas of content amplification, audience development, and online reader/user surveys
  • Provide in-person or online user training support and FAQ resources for communicators across our campuses who produce articles, and who are learning to use Drupal 8 news content tools
  • Help create and maintain an online library of best practice and step-by-step process documents

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in a related field such as fine arts, communications, digital marketing or web design
  • Two to three years' experience working directly in a CMS, creating and managing website assets and responding to technical troubleshooting issues. Familiarity with Drupal 8 is a definite asset in the role
  • Two to three years' experience in Adobe Photoshop, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Analytics, and Marketo or other email marketing software
  • Experience working with a Digital Asset Management archive platform is an asset, as is experience with Microsoft Teams, and Qualtrics or other online survey tools
  • Keen eye for impact photography and creating visually compelling online content packages
  • Develop and present reports using Powerpoint and other tools, integrating website analytics, graphics, and mathematical analysis, to show progress on the unit's goals through the use of numbers and visuals
  • Familiarity with creating and publishing social media content is an asset
  • Comfortable working independently or as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and a service-first mindset, juggling a variety of deadlines and demands
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, including writing for digital contexts
  • Ability to navigate a complex institutional setting and make presentations to fellow team members or clients
  • Ability to analyze and solve local problems, as well as articulate complex technical/process questions for consideration by others
  • Ability to think strategically and fulfil project goals within the context of organizational, program and team priorities
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to improve business analysis and reporting strategies
