Position Description
The University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) invites applications for an instructor position in Small Animal Surgery. We are looking for additional faculty to join our team for our expanded class size. This position will be a full or part time employment at Instructor (tenure track) or Senior Instructor (with tenure) ranks. Teaching will be 90% of this position and will include didactic, clinical and professional skills laboratories, and 4th year rotation teaching in the DVM program. Mentoring of clinical interns will also be part of the responsibilities. UCVM employs a distributed veterinary teaching hospital and clinical duties and rotation teaching will occur in partner specialty practices and other practice settings.
Qualifications include a DVM (or equivalent) and advanced clinical training in small animal surgery, with board certification or eligibility (American College of Veterinary Surgeons or European College of Veterinary Surgeons). A graduate degree in clinical or educational research is considered an asset. Must be licensed or eligible for immediate licensure in the Province of Alberta.
Appointments at the rank of Instructor require evidence of successful undergraduate teaching abilities. The duties of an Instructor will normally include, but not go beyond the scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and content in the discipline.
Appointments at the rank of Senior Instructor require evidence of successful undergraduate teaching effectiveness and innovation in teaching methods; evidence that the individual is capable of initiating and participating in a wide variety of teaching activities. The duties of a Senior Instructor will normally include, but not go beyond the scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and content in the discipline.
UCVM has approximately 70 faculty members, 130 staff, 125 DVM students, 110 graduate students, 25 post-doctoral fellows, and 15 advanced clinical trainees. UCVM’s DVM program provides a comprehensive general veterinary education to approximately 50 students per year. The program is an integrated core-elective program, with enhanced educational opportunities in defined areas that combine discipline-based courses with extensive on-campus and off-campus experiential learning. UCVM is a research-intensive faculty with expanding research, graduate education, and advanced clinical trainee programs.
