Position Overview

University of Calgary Continuing Education is currently seeking a non-credit Instructor to teach Environmental Site Assessment from January 18 - March 29, 2022.

University of Calgary Continuing Education (ContEd) is currently recruiting an Instructor (contract (term) position) to co-teach an Environmental Site Assessment course in the 2021-2022 academic year.
In support of the University of Calgary's core principles and financial objectives, Continuing Education is an academic unit with a mandate to respond to the needs of the community through the design, development and delivery of high-quality lifelong learning opportunities.
Each year, ContEd serves over 20,000 adult learners and offers more than one thousand courses taught by hundreds of instructors—all experts in their fields. It is expected to fund, through revenue generation, the majority of its operational costs while contributing financially to the university. 
The success of University of Calgary Continuing Education in meeting its business target in a competitive environment is dependent upon effectively serving students and by providing high-quality instruction and programs.

Position Description
These instructional positions are non-credit teaching appointments and, as such, are contract positions without benefits (other than those required by Employment Standards).

BMC 153 Environmental Site Assessment
Jan 18, 2022 to Mar 29, 2022 
Face-to-Face class

Course Description: Learn the theory and practical application of the principles of environmental site assessment (Phase I and Phase II). Explore a variety of techniques used to assess environmental impacts relating to site disturbance, contamination, and other stressors. The collection of data to achieve a specific purpose and methods for ensuring data quality are emphasized. Data interpretation and factors affecting data reliability are covered in detail, along with the correct use of sampling equipment. Other topics include: environmental management measures, including risk assessment, due diligence and regulatory methods. Case studies and in-class simulations make the course principles come alive.

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and benefits of the phased approach to environmental site assessment
  • Explain how the scientific method applies to environmental site assessment
  • Identify the primary methods used to collect information in environmental site assessment and define their appropriate application
  • Select an appropriate sampling method and design a basic sampling program
  • Design a program to maximize the quality of collected environmental information and be able to identify and apply techniques to minimize sources of error
  • Show how due diligence in property transactions is established through environmental site assessment, through an understanding of the regulatory and legal framework.

Scope of Responsibilities (high level)

  • Effective lessons plans, develop content, learning activities, presentations, assignments, evaluations, examinations (where applicable)
  • Utilize Desire2Learn (D2L) for all course materials and student communication
  • Utilize Zoom to facilitate any synchronous live sessions with activities (where applicable)

Qualifications – adjust according to the course/program.  

  • Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years of relevant industry work experience in the field as well as education such as industry certifications and/or academic qualification.
  • Adult learning certificate or equivalent is an asset.
  • Previous teaching experience is essential; post-secondary teaching experience is preferred
  • Previous experience utilizing e-learning tools (LMS, video conferencing tools, etc.) such as Desire2Learn, Blackboard, Moodle, Zoom, or similar is preferred
