Position Description

Libraries and Cultural Resources at the University of Calgary invites applications for the position of Digital Initiatives and Scholarship Librarian.  This is a tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of April 1, 2015.

Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) is a leader in the development of innovative information resources and services, locally, nationally and internationally. In a converged environment, it successfully incorporates the resources and services of libraries, institutional and research archives, rare books and special collections, art galleries, and a university press to provide outstanding support for scholarship, learning, and the creation of knowledge.

Position Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Technology, Discovery and Digital Services and working in collaboration with colleagues in Libraries and Cultural Resources and across campus, the Digital Initiatives and Scholarship Librarian plays an integral role in the development and management of innovative digital projects in support of the teaching and research mission of the University of Calgary. 

Responsibilities will include:

• collaborating with faculty, researchers and students to advance digital research initiatives and partnerships such as the Digital Scholars Lab, in conjunction with Digitization and Repository Services, Research Data and Visualization, Spatial and Numeric Data Services, the Copyright Office, the Prairie Regional Research Data Centre, liaison librarians and other subject specialists
• providing project planning and management, programming, and expertise for digital scholarship projects and participating as an active partner on project teams
• coordinating scholarly communication initiatives
• facilitating effective communication with the University community concerning LCR¿s digital initiatives and services
• participating in professional and campus initiatives involving new and emerging models of digital scholarship and scholarly communication
• identifying relevant best practices and standards in digital scholarship technologies
• supporting the development of the knowledge and understanding of scholarly communication issues to assist LCR colleagues with their participation in, and support of, digital scholarship projects
• tracking current issues and trends in digital scholarship and scholarly communication and promoting awareness among colleagues

As an academic staff position, appropriate participation and involvement in scholarship, teaching and service is expected.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited program in librarianship, or recognized equivalent
• Minimum of two years of progressively responsible professional experience
• Ability to work both independently and with a variety of groups in collaborative and cooperative situations
• High-level interpersonal and consultation skills
• Creative and analytical thinking skills and innovative problem-solving ability
• Demonstrated technical skills in areas related to digital libraries and digital scholarship
• Interest in exploring and evaluating new technologies and in seeking opportunities to share this knowledge with colleagues
• Understanding of scholarly communication and publishing issues and trends, including open access

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated commitment to advancing digital scholarship
• Evidence of successful project management
• Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively across scholarly and technology domains
• Experience in providing research support and consultation to faculty, researchers and/or students
• Familiarity with academic and scholarly research practices

Salary and Benefits

Position will commensurate with qualifications and experience, at the rank of Assistant Librarian (Salary Range is $58,000 to 79,070).
