Geospatial Research Coordinator, Geography, Faculty of Arts

Position Overview

The Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a Geospatial Research Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Geospatial Research Coordinator reports to the Principal Investigator and directs interactions, coordinates research, and facilitates knowledge transfer between the Boreal Ecosystem Recovery and Assessment (BERA) program and the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI). BERA ( is a multi-sectoral research alliance housed at the University of Calgary. It is comprised of academic and non-academic partners, including ABMI. ABMI ( provides scientifically credible information on Alberta's wildlife and habitats for land-use managers and decision-makers within the province. It is an operational organization, and one of the primary targets of BERA research outcomes.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):


  • Considers different possibilities and implications
  • Coordinates priorities of the research project to meet deadlines
  • Will be required to liaise with senior researchers and leaders on issues that are outside of the scope of responsibility
  • Defines strategies, establishes standard operating procedures and executes plans
  • Will support teaching and research and conveying expertise and knowledge to all personnel
  • Instructs others in the use of project management tools
  • May lead or supervise the operations staff and/or technicians on projects
  • Team lead responsibilities

Judgment and Decision Making

  • Makes decisions that require choosing between multiple options or may develop new options to resolve moderately complex problems
  • Makes decisions in ambiguous situations within established process, procedures and guidelines pertaining to their own research project team
  • Uses own scientific judgment to apply and adapt standard methods and techniques by applying prior work experience and consulting others appropriately
  • Uses judgment to identify and resolve day-to-day technical and operational issues in coordinating the research project
  • Responsible for developing and managing project budget

Communication and Scientific Contribution

  • Explains difficult issues and works to build alignment around a complex situation
  • Communicates data quality issues with site coordinators and outstanding discrepancies with reporting requirements to the sponsor and the Principal Investigator
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Responsible for writing, compiling and submitting operational grants for funding applications
  • Valuable communication with Principal Investigator
  • Assists Principal Investigator in design of project scope and strategic direction with a clear focus on knowledge translation, including publishing in peer-reviewed research articles 
  • Supports the overall objectives of BERA and ABMI, and supports leadership in advancing critical scientific contributions
  • Publishes and/or presents technical papers to external audiences; participates in internal publications
  • Provides clear direction to staff and students in fast changing environment when there is complex and partial information

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Requires familiarity with digital image processing and analysis, and an understanding of scientific theory, methods, and principles as they relate to this field.
  • Knowledge of technologies for processing and analyzing large spatial datasets is an asset (e.g., Google Earth Engine).
  • Requires experience in GIS and programming for image, statistical, or other analyses (e.g., R, Python, JavaScript, or similar).
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis theory and practice (spatial and non-spatial) is valuable.
  • Familiarity with machine learning theory and practice, web-based applications, and web maps is an asset.
  • Requires excellent communication skills (written and verbal), with an ability to translate complex scientific concepts, data, or deliverables into accessible, public knowledge.
  • Ability to work independently and develop innovative solutions when problem-solving or meeting challenges is important; as is the ability to work within a collaborative setting or team.
  • Requires ability to engage graduate students and other trainees in the research within the relevant UofC programs (Graduate Studies, Undergraduate Honours, etc.).
  • Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in Geography, Geospatial Science, or similar field. 
  • 5+ years of post-graduate project management experience.
  • Evidence of established research excellence (publications in peer-reviewed journals, demonstrated research accomplishments).
  • Advanced technical skills with growing scientific contributions.
  • Understands and applies regulatory/compliance/scientific requirements relative to their role.
  • Requires good understanding of concepts, theories and principles as they relate to management of the research project.
  • Coordinates the administrative processes of the research project or unit.
  • Demonstrates effective use of technology and processes to complete assignments.
  • Explores through experimentation; new ideas and knowledge are used with increasing frequency.
  • Ability to solve complex problems.
  • Knowledge of University of Calgary business and research systems.
  • Knowledge of University of Calgary graduate programs and policies.
  • Expertise in both qualitative and quantitative methodology.
  • Experience leading research initiatives.
